Unexpected Hill, Royal Academy

Embracing the dimensions of an installation

Unexpected Hill was a temporary outdoor art installation created by emerging Istanbul-based practice, SO? Architecture and Ideas. Inspired by Muqarnas, a form of ornamental tiled vaulting in Islamic architecture, SO? reimagined the traditional use of ceramics from a small-scale decorative material to a large surface structure. Built next to the Royal Academy’s Burlington Gardens entrance, the work takes the form of a urban landscape of triangular ceramic prisms, allowing passers-by to sit and climb.

We translated the artwork’s shapes and structure into design and print for marketing materials and environmental graphics. For the private view invitation, we recreated the plan view of the installation into an extruded, three-dimensional sculpture made from layers of die-cut card.
